International Patient Assistance Program (TIPAP)
Q1. What is International Patient Assistance Program (TIPAP)?
According to GIPAP- International Patient Assistance Program since its launch in 2002- GIPAP has provided Imatinib free of charge to help poor patients with CML and GIST in 80 developing countries with minimal reimbursement capabilities to more than 27,000 patients. The goal of the program to help poor patients access the innovative medicines.
After the success of GIPAP program--Novartis AG discovered another innovative medication called Nilotinib and TIPAP program was developed to help poor patients with chronic or accelerated phase Philadelphia chromosome-positive chronic myeloid leukemia (Ph+ CML) who have not responded or are no longer responsive to or are unable to tolerate to Imatinib? (imatinib mesylate)
Q2 How does TIPAP work?
The TIPAP? model is designed to provide the drug to individual eligible patients as opposed to typical donation programs that deliver drugs through a central location or third-party distribution organization. Novartis AG partnered with The Max Foundation, which is a US-based non-profit cancer organization, to administer TIPAP program. The Max Foundation is responsible for reviewing and verifying patients’ eligibility according to specific medical and socio-economic requirements provided by Novartis.
Q3. Who is eligible for TIPAP?
- Local resident where the program is available
- Properly diagnosed
- Not insured;
- Not reimbursed;
- And have no other financial recourse (cannot pay for it privately).
Q4. How can we apply into the program?
To ensure only properly diagnosed patients are accepted into the program, the qualified physicians in each country in which GIPAP operates must first recommend and submit an application on behalf of the patient through locally based MaxStations.
TMF confirms medical and socio-economic eligibility requirements and notify the approval to physician, patient and Novartis. Then, the qualified patients will receive the free donation from Novartis AG.

The Max Foundation is responsible for reviewing and verifying patients’ eligibility according to specific medical requirements provided by Novartis and performing socio-economic evaluations.

Novartis is responsible for identifying qualified medical centers and physicians in collaboration with the Max Foundation., Novartis donates and supplies Nilotinib to qualified treatment centers.
